Wilpinjong Mine Expansion
Peabody Energy is proposing yet another major expansion of the Wilpinjong mine, adding two additional new disturbance areas known as Pit 9 and Pit 10. This proposed new development is in the large EL 9399 granted by NSW Coalition Minister, John Barilaro, in 2022.
This proposed ongoing expansion of opencut coal mining that will surround Wollar village is unacceptable with increased cumulative environmental impacts beyond 2034.
The project is proposing to produce an additional 43 MT coal and is likely to extend the life of this large thermal coal operation until 2044. A scoping report is expected to be lodged with the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure before the end of 2025.
With climate triggers already met for coral reefs and rainforests, it is untenable for the coal industry to continue pushing out production approvals for another 20 years. For the NSW Climate Change (Net Zero Future) 2023 to meet greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets no more coal expansion can be approved.
